Ollie Cross (Tye Sheridan) is a young paramedic who, while preparing for his medical school entrance exam, rides with Gene Rutovsky in an ambulance through the streets of New York. Rutovsky (Sean Penn), seasoned in a thousand battles and one of the most veteran paramedics in the city, will be his partner and mentor. From him she will learn everything important to treat patients and survive their daily chaos.
