Under the starry sky of the historic Roman amphitheater of St. Margarethen, the tragedy of Rigoletto came to life in one of the most visually stunning
productions of the 2017 season. This open-air version, stage directed by Philippe Arlaud,
offered a modern, powerful and emotionally devastating reading of the Verdian drama, marrying artistry, technology and great voices.
With a colossal set design by Hans Schavernoch, evoking a dark and oppressive world – between the prison, the ceremonial
and the dreamlike – the stage was transformed into a great chessboard of destiny where the characters were dragged towards an inevitable end.
The spectacular lighting, projection effects and intelligent use of space resulted in an intense staging,
cinematographic, which amplified the human dilemmas of power, love, revenge and loss.
