The year is 1974. Ana is 19 years old, lives in Barcelona, and is—in the eyes of her well-to-do family—a rebellious girl. After running away one night, her father decides to place her in the care of the Women’s Protection Board, an institution specializing in “women who have fallen or are at risk of falling.” Ana is sent to Madrid to be admitted to a reformatory run by nuns and subjected to a brutal disciplinary regime.
There, she’ll try to survive by seeking comfort and support in the friendship of other girls in the same situation, especially Sole, a small-town girl with an infectious vitality who connects with her instantly. That radiant friendship will be what keeps Ana afloat.
