Álava, late 19th century. As the Third Carlist War draws to a close, several women are found strangled on the outskirts of Vitoria. Ángela Berrosteguieta, the sister of one of the victims, arrives seeking justice, determined to prove that Juan Díaz de Garayo, an illiterate peasant, is responsible for the crimes. However, Pío Pinedo, chief of the constables, faces a lack of resources in wartime and pressure from the authorities, who prefer to cover up the growing wave of murders.
